Access to UCLA Library Special Collections

The UCLA Library's primary responsibility is to students, faculty, and staff affiliated with the University of California (UC). However, the Library makes its resources available to others whenever possible and when it does not conflict with its primary mission. Accordingly, Performing Arts Special Collections welcomes all non-UC researchers eighteen years or older.

In order to protect and preserve the collections, materials do not circulate but are available in the reading room.

Researchers are expected to abide by reading room protocols, which are designed to maintain the integrity and ensure the preservation of the collections and to provide for long-term access.

For identification and security purposes, researchers must both present a valid UCLA Library card or a valid UCLA BruinCard and register at the reference desk in the reading room.

Researchers not affiliated with UCLA, the UC system, or other contractual agencies may occasionally be asked to reschedule visits to use the collections due to limited reading room space.

Special Accommodations

Researchers requiring special accommodations are asked to contact public services staff at least five working days in advance at 310.825.7253.

Research Tips

  • The UCLA Library offers many online resources to help researchers get started, including the UCLA Library Catalog and the Online Archive of California.
  • Not all finding aids for collections are available online; contact staff to schedule an appointment to consult printed finding aids in the reading room.
  • Performing Arts Special Collections is open by appointment only from Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Researchers are encouraged to contact the public service desk well in advance of a planned visit at 310.825.7253 or by email; requests will be answered in the order received.
