Opportunities for Involvement

Librarians have many opportunities to become involved in the Information Literacy Program (ILP), including focused pilot studies and task groups, ongoing interest groups, one-time assistance or feedback on a project, and attendance at workshops and programs. You can also let your unit's representative on the ILP steering committee know about your interests, ideas, concerns, and training needs and send information on your IL successes, presentations, and articles to the communications interest group, which will help them highlight your IL activities and inspire others to become involved. For further information on how to become involved, contact Robert Gore by email or by telephone at 310.206.5426.

ILP interest groups provide a sustained way to become involved in a cluster of issues and projects that can benefit librarians across campus. Consider joining one of the current ones listed below; contact the relevant group leader to see what projects are happening now or are on the horizon.

Assessment

The assessment interest group designs and undertakes projects large and small that measure the information literacy of UCLA students and the effectiveness of the program. Completed and ongoing projects include ETS ICT testing, the SIA database, and ILI self-assessment. Leader: Contact Robert Gore.

Collaborations and Partnerships

The collaborations and partnerships interest group seeks out collaborations with groups, departments, and individuals on campus to develop projects and pilots that improve information literacy of UCLA students. This group can work with librarians and units to facilitate collaborations. Completed and ongoing projects include the Sociology Department-Library project, collaboration with ORL for LITE Bites project, and collaboration with Dean of Students Office for plagiarism workshops. Leader: Robert Gore

Communications

The communications interest group increases librarian and campus awareness of information literacy issues and ILP efforts. Completed and ongoing projects include the ILP Web site, faculty focus groups, and short articles for Library Staff Newsweb. Leader: Andrea Lynch

Instructional Development

The instructional development interest group helps librarians to become more effective teachers of information literacy. Completed and ongoing projects include the ILP workshop series, invited speakers, sharing sessions and brown bags, and support for online seminars and conferences. Leader: Diane Mizrachi

Instructional Technologies

The instructional technologies interest group investigates emerging technologies; evaluates them for IL instruction applications; develops projects, trials, and pilots; and explores instructional technologies such as clickers, course management systems, digital learning objects, tools for tutorial design, and gaming software, then reports on their potential value for IL instruction. Leader: Lisa Kemp Jones.
