Powell Music and DancesFall 2008 Concerts in the RotundaAll concerts are free and held in the Powell Library second floor rotunda. No reservations are needed. Marina VWednesday, October 15Afternoon Concert - 4 p.m. Russian-born pop artist and songwriter Marina V has been called an intriguing blend of an angelic voice, hooky melodies, thoughtful lyrics and fresh chord progressions; an unusual mix of Tori Amos, Jewel and Paul McCartney, but "with her unique phrasing, breathless, smoky-sweet and compelling vocals, she's got a sound all her own" (Artist Studio Magazine). Keyboard Magazine called her "one of the most promising singer/songwriters of the year," and the L.A. Times said she's "hauntingly beautiful." She co-writes her songs with Nick Baker and is managed by David Krebs (Aerosmith, AC/DC, etc.) Her live performances are considered emotionally intense and hypnotic. Turath Ensemble: Sha'ir Wa MutribFriday, November 14Evening Concert - 8 p.m. The Turath Ensemble and members of the UCLA Near East Ensemble will perform traditional Arab music, song, and poetry reading in an event entitled Sha'ir Wa Mutrib (A Poet and a Singer). Sami Maalouf will read from the work of the Syrian romantic poet Nizar Qabbani. The songs will be in honor of the Lebanese singer Wadi' al-Safi, featuring vocalist Michel Bilel. The Ensemble, directed by Sami Asmar, will also perform instrumental compositions for the late Egyptian composer M. Abd al-Wahhab. The concert celebrates the Turath-Racy Fellowship for Arab Music Studies, named in honor of UCLA Professor of Ethnomusicology A.J. Racy.
