Resources in Vital and Health Statistics: Specialized Subject Areas

Certain topics are particularly challenging to research using general sources, and therefore have more specific sources associated with them. Within each area, sources are arranged from the more general topics to the more specific. The three topics covered are:

Minority Health

Trends in Racial and Ethnic-Specific Rates for the Health Status Indicators: United States, 1990–1998 This document is Number 23 of the Healthy People 2000 Statistical Notes series. In addition to providing health statistics for five ethnic populations, it provides links to information sources.
MEDLINEplus: Population Groups Topics Part of the National Library of Medicine, this index page provides access to information, including statistics, on a variety of population groups.
Data/Statistics Part of the Office of Minority Health site, this page provides links to outside statistical information and publication of the OMH.
HispanicHealth.org A service of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, the “Health News” section provides links to current research on ethnic health issues, including many statistical resources.
IHS Publications and Reports Part of the extensive Indian Health Services site, this page provides access to IHS publications such as the “Regional Differences in Indian Health” and “Trends in Indian Health” series, as well as documents on special health topics. See also the “IHS Area Publications” and “Statistical Databases” links.
Native Health Research Database Although this database, sponsored by The Indian Health Service and the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center, does not provide statistics directly, many of the research articles provide statistical information.
National Indian Council on Aging - Atlas  This system provides maps of demographic and health information on American Indians and Alaska Natives. (under construction)

Children’s Health

UNICEF Statistics UNICEF provides international statistics on children and children’s health.
ChildStats.gov Offered by the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics, this site provides demographic and health statistics on a national and international level.
Child and Infant Health This is a brief fact sheet on children’s health offered by FastStats. For more in-depth health statistics, see the sections on “Summary Health Statistics for U.S. Children: National Health Interview Survey” and “America’s Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being 2001.”
Data Warehouse - Statistical Tables, Charts and Graphs Part of the National Center for Health Statistics site, this page provides links to statistical information on the topics of breastfeading, infant mortality, low birthweight and prenatal care.
Kids Count A service of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, this site provides access to a number of different statistical sources. Tip: try using the links for “More Data Books” and “More Census Products.”
PeriStats Developed by the March of Dimes Perinatal Data Center, the PeriStats web site provides free access to U.S., state, county, and city maternal- and infant-health data. The site can be used to create graphs and maps, as well as to get quick facts and state summaries.

Elder Health

AgingStats.Gov An interagency effort, this site provides demographic and health statistics for older Americans and also serves as a gateway to other United States government sites related to aging.
Age Data A part of the U.S. Census site, this page provides links to age-related demographic data.
Aging Statistics Provided by the Administration on Aging, this site is an extensive list of links to age-related health and demographic statistics on both the national and state level.
Older Person's Health This page is part of the National Center for Health Statistics site and provides health statistics for older Americans on a number of topics, such as hearing and dental health.
Profile of Older Americans Provided by the Administration on Aging, this page provides a summary of demographic and health information.
Statistics & Demographics - Facts About California's Elderly Offered by the California Department of Aging, this page provides quick demographic information on the state, as well as links to more indepth tables on California seniors.
