Art Full Text and Art Index Retrospective

The Art Full Text and Art Retrospective databases contain records for items in the fields of archaeology, architecture, art history, city planning, computer applications and graphics, crafts, film, folk art, graphic arts, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, museology, painting, photography, sculpture, television, textiles, and video. Art Full Text covers the literature from 1984 to the present. Art Index Retrospective covers the same literature from 1929-1984.

ARTbibliographies Modern

A bibliographic database covering modern and contemporary art and design and the history of photography. Headings include names, museum and gallery names, and new art terms not yet established as authoritative. The database contains abstracts of periodical articles, books, exhibition catalogs, and dissertations covering all aspects of art, ranging from research on major figures and movements from the late 19th century to the latest developments in the avant-garde, and including all types of decorative and applied art, photography and design.

Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA)

This database covers European and American art from late antiquity to the present. It indexes and abstracts art-related books, conference proceedings and dissertations, exhibition and dealer's catalogs, and articles from more than 2,500 periodicals. The online index covers 1973 to the present.

Expanded Academic

Provides abstracts and sometimes full text for articles in 1500+ magazines and scholarly journals in all disciplines; covers 1988-present. Good for exhibition reviews and feature articles in non-art titles.

Many artists have created their own webpages while others are represented on commercial or network sites. Information may vary considerably; often selected images and some biographical data are included . How to contact the artist is usually given. Visit the Internet Resources: Art and Art History webpage and browse the following sections: Meta Indexes, Image Databases, Reference Sources, and Contemporary Art . Some collective sites feature contemporary artists. Use any of the search engines , such as Google, on the Web to search for particular names. By doing this you may pick up articles, exhibition information, press releases, and other commentary.

    St. James Guide to Black Artists. Detroit, St. James Press, 1997

    Published in association with the Schomburg left for Research in Black Culture. Contains biographical and career information, as well as brief critical essays, on nearly 400 of the most prominent black visual artists of the 20th century. Includes a small number of artists from the 19th century. About three quarters of the entrants are African Americans and the remainder are from Africa, the Caribbean, and other parts of the diaspora. Includes black and white photographs of selected artists and their works.
