Arts Library News: Fall/Winter 2007/08

New Appointments

The Arts Library welcomes two new librarians in September 2007.

Janine Henri joins the Arts Library as the architecture, design, and digital services librarian. She will be responsible for working with the architecture and design|media arts departments and will assume responsibility as the library’s liaison to ARTstor. Henri comes to UCLA after serving as the head librarian at the Architecture and Planning Library at the University of Texas at Austin since 1995; prior to that she was art librarian in the Fine Arts Library at UT Austin during 1991-95. She earned her MLIS from UC Berkeley, achieved master's candidacy in art history at UCLA, and earned a BA in design in crafts from San Diego State University. Henri has been a frequent presenter at professional meetings and has published numerous articles and book reviews. She is an active member of several professional associations and in 2008-09 will serve as president of the Association of Architecture School Librarians.

Diana L. King joins the Arts Library as the new film, television, and theater librarian. She can be reached by email or by phone at 310.206.4823.

King has been a librarian in the humanities and social sciences department of the UC Davis Library since November 2001; her areas of responsibility have included collection development, instruction, reference, and faculty outreach in film and media studies, theatre and dance, literatures in English, and women and gender studies. She earned her MLS in 2001 and an MA in English in 1998, both from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and a BA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a major in English literature and a minor in cinema studies. she is active in professional associations and has assumed leadership roles in UC bibliographer groups, serving as chair of both the English and American literature bibliographers and the U.S./British history and women’s studies consortia.

New Arts Library Web Page

The new Arts Library Web site has been launched. The new site includes enhanced access to information about the library and provides easier access to research tools for all of the disciplines the library serves.

Words Unbound: Exploring Artists' Books

On Friday, December 7, Cristina Favretto, rare books librarian in the Charles E. Young Research Library Department of Special Collections, and Visual Arts Librarian Robert Gore will explore artist's books from UCLA Library collections, highlighting collecting practices and the historical development of this unique genre. Selections from the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library's artists' book collection will further enhance this study program.

New Photocopiers/BruinCard Payment for Photocopying, Printing, and Scanning

There are two new photocopiers in the Arts Library, and the two scanners will be replaced with a new, full-service scanner early in the fall quarter. On August 27 the UCLA Library implemented a new system using the UCLA BruinCard for copying, printing, and scanning services. UCLA students, faculty, and staff can add value to their cards at BruinCard machines located in nine libraries, including the Arts Library, and visitors can purchase and add value to special visitor BruinCards at the machines.

Fall Quarter Exhibits in the Arts Library

To celebrate the new addition of a second display case, the Arts Library is presenting two exhibits this fall.

"Jennifer Bolande: Guggenheim Fellow," which will run until November 16, highlights the work of new genres Professor Jennifer Bolande, who is a Guggenheim Fellow for 2007/08.

"Artists' Books: Recent Acquisitions," opening on November 19 and continuing through the fall quarter, highlights artists' books acquired by the library since 2005.

ARTstor Training Session on October 19

ARTstor is a digital library containing 550,000 images and data covering a wide range of cultures and time periods created specifically to support teaching and learning. Along with those in art and architecture, faculty and students in a variety of disciplines will find the content in ARTstor of interest. A training session will be held on Friday, October 19, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the West Electronic Classroom (room 23167) at the Charles E. Young Research Library. During the demonstration, participants will be introduced to many of the features of ARTstor that can help meet curricular needs. Topics will include how to locate images, download them, combine personal images with ARTstor content, save images to files that students can access, integrate ARTstor with course management systems, and create presentations using ARTstor’s Offline Image Viewer, which is similar to PowerPoint.
