CDL Adds Online Science Journals and Historical DatabasesThe California Digital Library (CDL), a virtual tenth library of the UC system, has recently added a number of online journals and two extensive historical databases to its rapidly expanding electronic resources. Elsevier ScienceDirect America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts All CDL resources can be accessed through the UCLA Library home page at <http://www2.library.ucla.edu> or directly at <http://www.cdlib.org>. Access to some resources is restricted to users at public workstations within the libraries or to UCLA students, faculty, and staff with domain names of ucla.edu or dialing in on Bruin OnLine accounts. For help with using any CDL resource, please consult librarians at the reference desk in any library unit or through e-mail at <url-ref@library.ucla.edu> (Young Research Library), <biomed-ref@library.ucla.edu> (Biomedical Library), or <sel-ref@library.ucla.edu> (Science & Engineering Library). UCLA Library and Physics Department Launch New E-Publishing ProjectThe UCLA Physics Department, in conjunction with the UCLA Library, has published the proceedings of the 1999 annual meeting of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society on a permanent World Wide Web site, located at <http://www.dpf99.library.ucla.edu>. This electronic publishing project is expected to become the model by which all subsequent DPF proceedings will be published, as electronic documents only. More than 200 conference papers are solely published on the Web site, covering topics including electroweak interactions; neutrino masses and oscillations; heavy flavor physics; weak decays and charge parity violation; perturbative and non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics; quantum gravity, strings, and duality; cosmology and dark matter; and high energy astrophysics. The editors of the proceedings are UCLA physics professors Katsushi Arisaka and Zvi Bern, with assistant editors Steven Khalily and Juleen Moon from the staff of the UCLA Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. There are no restrictions on who can access the site. Users can browse or search the proceedings on the Web site, and they will also be indexed in INSPEC, a California Digital Library-hosted database. For further assistance, consult the staff at the reference desk in the Science & Engineering Library/Engineering & Mathematical Sciences. New Associate University Librarian for Collections and Technical Services AppointedUniversity Librarian Gloria Werner has appointed Cynthia Shelton as the new associate university librarian for collections and technical services. Shelton has been head of the YRL Bibliographers Group since 1983, in addition to handling collection development responsibilities for American and British history, history of science, and women's studies. She is a member of the California Digital Library's joint steering committee for shared collections and recently organized a series of editors' forums with UCLA faculty editors and writers to discuss issues of information technology and scholarly publishing. She began her UCLA Library career as a special collections cataloger in 1986 and holds both a Ph.D. in history and an MLS from UCLA. Shelton succeeds Brian Schottlaender, who has left UCLA to become university librarian at UC San Diego. Oral History Program Celebrates its Fortieth AnniversaryFrom Franklin Murphy to John Wooden, from Tom Bradley to Diane Watson, from Ray Bradbury to Bella Lewitzky – over the years the UCLA Library's Oral History Program has collected intimate perspectives from noteworthy figures on the institutional history of UCLA, the growth and development of Southern California, and other nationally and internationally significant topics. This October the program will celebrate its fortieth anniversary with several special events, including a reception on Wednesday, October 27, at the Faculty Center. Guests will include many subjects of oral histories as well as university and community leaders. In addition, an exhibit focusing on several of the program's thematic areas will be on view in the Charles E. Young Research Library (YRL) lobby during the month of December. The Oral History Program was established in 1959 by the Regents of the University of California upon the urging of historians, librarians, and other members of the UCLA community. A unit of the YRL Department of Special Collections, the program has since built a national reputation for its extensive collection in regional and local oral history. The program has conducted more than 800 audiotaped interviews of persons selected for their ability to provide firsthand observations on a variety of historical topics; the tapes range from one to 76 hours in length and are sometimes supplemented by video segments. The interviews are transcribed, edited, and bound and are available through the YRL Department of Special Collections. The department recently published the third edition of the printed catalog of the program's holdings: Teresa Barnett, compiler; The UCLA Oral History Program: Catalog of the Collection (Los Angeles: Charles E. Young Research Library, Department of Special Collections, 1999). In addition, in many cases interview subjects have given the library relevant personal papers, which are accessible to researchers. For further information on the Oral History Program, visit its Web site at <http://www.library.ucla.edu/libraries/special/ohp/ohpindex.htm> or call the office at extension 54932. New East Asian Library Head NamedAmy Tsiang has been named as the head of the Richard C. Rudolph East Asian Library. Tsiang has served as interim head since May 1998; prior to that, she was the head of cataloging in the East Asian Library for eight years. Tsiang began her career with the UCLA Library in 1969, when she was hired as a Chinese cataloger and reference librarian in the then-named Oriental Library. She earned her MLS degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia. Library Instructional ServicesAre you interested in Library instruction for your students, or in learning more about Library resources yourself? Consult the Library Web page at <http://www.library.ucla.edu/instruc/> for information about orientation sessions and demonstrations of basic online catalog, database, and Internet searching designed for faculty and student users. Librarians also give in-class presentations upon request, focusing on the bibliographies of specific subjects, strategies for conducting a literature search, and methods of searching electronic resources. In addition, librarians are available to meet individually with faculty members to provide assistance with research projects. To arrange an in-class presentation or make an appointment for an individual consultation, contact the librarian at the appropriate subject library as indicated on the Library Web page at <http://www.library.ucla.edu/welcome/services/fac-ta/classsup.htm#contacts>.
