Online Reference Paper Wins Award

College librarians Alice Kawakami and Pauline Swartz won an outstanding paper award from the Emerald Literati Club for "Digital Reference: Training and Assessment for Service Improvement," which appeared in Reference Services Review in 2003. The award honors papers that present a new thought or concept to audiences in an exceptional way.

The article describes the first of a series of assessments created to reveal gaps in training of librarians staffing the UCLA Library's online reference service, which offers real-time, Web-based assistance. The goal is to conduct a comprehensive evaluation that will result in crafting best practices for the online reference service. The paper is available online.

The prestigious Emerald Literati Awards are given annually by the leading international publisher in the library and information sciences, engineering, property, and health care and management sectors.
