April 15 Exhibition Concert Features Student PerformancesThe UCLA Library will present "Fighting the Fires of Hate: Musical Responses," a concert of student performances, on Tuesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in Jan Popper Theater. Admission is free, and seating is unreserved. The concert will feature undergraduate and graduate students performing works by composers including Paul Hindemith, Olivier Messiaen, Ernst Toch, and Eric Zeisl. It is co-sponsored by the UCLA Library, UCLA Department of Music, and the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. The concert has been organized in conjunction with the traveling exhibition "Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings," which is on view in the Charles E. Young Research Library through April 20. Organized by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the exhibition provides a vivid look at the steps the Nazis took in 1933 to suppress freedom of expression, the strong response that occurred in the U.S. immediately following the book burnings and during the war, and the continued presence of this incendiary event in public discourse throughout the ensuing years. Further information about the exhibition is available on the exhibits Web page or on a phone recording at 310.825.6925. |
