2009 Guest Judge

Mrs. Carol Block, wife of UCLA Chancellor Gene D. Block

In July 2007 Mrs. Block moved to Los Angeles with her husband after twenty-nine years in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was employed as a medical technologist in the clinical microbiology laboratory at the University of Virginia health system.

Prior to moving to Virginia in 1978, Mrs. Block worked in the microbiology laboratory at the Silas B. Hays Army Hospital on the Monterey peninsula, at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto during 1975-76, and at Pathology Consultants in Eugene, Oregon, during 1970-75.

Currently, Mrs. Block is employed part-time by the clinical microbiology laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UCLA Medical Center. She specializes in medical mycology, the identification of fungi.

Born in Monticello, New York, Mrs. Block holds a bachelor's degree in medical technology from George Washington University. After spending many of her childhood years involved with music, playing the piano and oboe, she continues her interest in music by taking advantage of the wealth of performances on campus and in Los Angeles. She also finds time to play her piano at home.

Mrs. Block and her husband have two children.
