Description of Library Unit

The UCLA Library Cataloging and Metadata Center is the largest of the cataloging centers in the UCLA Library system. It is primarily responsible for cataloging and preparing annually more than 90,000 titles (monographs, serials, and integrating resources) in various formats and languages. The Center serves the cataloging needs of the Arts, Biomedical, College, Management, Music, Science and Engineering, and Young Research Libraries, as well as of six small collections on campus. The Center’s 15 FTE librarians and 31.25 FTE staff are organized into seven sections: Authority/Database Maintenance, Serials Cataloging, E-Resources Cataloging and Metadata, Monographic Cataloging, Copy Cataloging, Physical Processing, and Training and Documentation. The Center is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and contributes to BIBCO, CONSER, NACO, and SACO.

Within the Cataloging and Metadata Center, the Serials Cataloging Section is responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of serials and some other continuing resources in all subjects and formats in accordance with CONSER policy, AACR2r, LCRI, LCSH, MeSH, and the Library of Congress and NLM classification schedules.

Position Duties

  • Under the general direction of the Section Head, the Serials and E-Resources Cataloger is primarily responsible for original/complex cataloging and maintenance of bibliographic records for serials (in a variety of formats) and electronic integrating resources for all subjects and in various languages.
  • In performing these duties, uses tools such as the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, CONSER Editing Guide, CONSER Cataloging Manual, subject cataloging manuals, classification schedules, and a variety of reference works.
  • Contributes CONSER/BIBCO records to the national bibliographic database (OCLC) for distribution to the local integrated library system and to the UC system-wide catalog (Melvyl®).
  • Responsible for name, series, and subject authority work, and for contribution of name and series authority records to the national authority files.
  • Responsible for problem resolution in the UCLA catalog for legacy serial bibliographic records and for records entered by the Southern Regional Library Facility.
  • Responds also to requests for metadata advice, in support of UCLA digital library projects.
  • Additional responsibilities may also include development of procedures/workflows for the section; maintenance of Section web site; e-resource maintenance; liaison work with selectors and staff of client units.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR significant graduate-level coursework toward a Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience).
  • Knowledge of national standards; in particular, application of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2r), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and classification, MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data.
  • Knowledge of CONSER cataloging practices; in particular, the CONSER Editing Guide and CONSER Cataloging Manual.
  • Experience with the principles of authority control.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more Western European languages.
  • Knowledge of trends in automation as they relate to cataloging.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web and library relevant information technology applications.
  • Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in local or national committee work, research, publication, etc., in cataloging or in a subject expertise.
  • Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities, including a flexible approach to working in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a production-oriented environment, and to develop and adjust workflow to meet service needs.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with staff, students, and faculty of culturally diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in cataloging materials through a cataloging utility, such as OCLC or RLIN, in an integrated library system environment.
  • Experience in the use of electronic cataloging support tools such as Classification Web and Cataloger’s Desktop.
  • Familiarity with the Library of Congress Program on Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and experience in creating or contributing NACO records.
  • Familiarity with one or more non-roman script languages.
  • Knowledge of non-MARC descriptive metadata standards such as Dublin Core.
  • Familiarity with NLM classification and MeSH subject headings.

General Information

Professional librarians at UCLA are academic appointees. Librarians at UCLA are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). They are entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel. Appointees to the librarian series at UCLA shall have professional backgrounds which demonstrate a high degree of creativity, teamwork, and flexibility. Such background will normally include a professional degree from an accredited library and information science graduate program. Professional contributions beyond the primary job, e.g., publications, active participation in University and professional organizations, and other research and creative activity, are required for advancement within the Librarian series. Candidates must show evidence or promise of such contribution.
