Guest Judge and Honoree

2008 Guest Judge Tony Bill

Director/producer Tony Bill has been a major presence in the world of book collecting and connoisseurship for many years.  His extensive collection of books on early aviation currently resides at the San Francisco Aviation Library and Museum.  His other collection, of twentieth-century American fiction first editions, has been heralded as one of the finest in the world.  The single most important criterion for inclusion in this library has been condition; his standard has even entered the antiquarian lexicon as "Tony Bill condition."

Bill’s directing credits include My Bodyguard, Five Corners, and Flyboys.  His production credits include The Sting, Taxi Driver, and Going in Style.

Bill’s wife, producer Helen Bartlett, is also a collector of first editions of women’s fiction, poetry, and Willa Cather.  Her credits include North Country, Untamed Heart, and In the Time of the Butterflies.

2008 Honoree Doug Dutton

Doug Dutton’s famous independent bookstore, Dutton’s, is closing on April 30, to the intense regret of every Westside bibliophile. Considered by many to be the most literary, high-minded, and charming bookstore in Los Angeles, Dutton’s has supported writers and readers for twenty-three years. Join the UCLA Library as it honors Doug Dutton, a true book lover, friend of readers and writers, and deeply civilized human being.
